Hives
Hives, or urticaria, are red, itchy welts on the skin caused by an allergic reaction or other triggers.
Symptoms
- Raised, red or skin-colored welts
- Itching and burning sensation
- Welts that vary in size and shape
- Swelling of lips, eyelids, or throat in severe cases (angioedema)
- Symptoms that come and go quickly
Causes
- Allergic reactions to food, medications, or insect stings
- Infections
- Stress or physical stimuli (heat, cold, pressure)
- Autoimmune disorders
- Unknown causes (idiopathic)
Treatments
- Antihistamines to reduce itching and swelling
- Avoiding identified triggers
- Epinephrine for severe allergic reactions
- Corticosteroids in chronic or severe cases
- Omalizumab (Xolair) for chronic urticaria
Prevention
- Identify and avoid known allergens
- Keep a symptom diary to detect triggers
- Manage stress effectively
- Wear loose-fitting clothes
- Use gentle soaps and moisturizers
